Club Championship

Each year the WA Marathon Club awards the most outstanding female and male performance over multiple events from the nominated Club Championship events on the annual Programme, in each of the age groups. The methodology for determining the winner of each age group is as follows:

Kilometer Pace – The average kilometre pace (minutes per kilometre) will be calculated for each competitor for each event. This pace will be converted into an "equivalent 10km pace" to ensure all race distances are treated equally. The "equivalent 10km pace" from the best 7 events (5 events for over 60's and 16-24; and 3 events for under 16's) will be averaged to give an overall kilometre pace for each person.

The person with the fastest kilometre pace will be deemed the Champion if their pace is more than 10 sec/km faster than the second fastest person. If the difference between the top runners is 10 sec/km or less, the criteria described below will be used to determine the Champion.

State Championship Events and Major Events – Results in State Championship events (Perth Marathon, Bridges Fun Run 10km, Fremantle Half Marathon) and other major events (Joondalup Half Marathon, Perth Half Marathon, Fremantle Running Festival 10km, Brooks Rottnest Marathon & 10km) will be reviewed for head-to-head battles and finishing position. If two (or more) of the top runners in each age category race head-to-head in these events, the person with the most higher placings will be deemed the Champion.

If the two (or more) top runners do not race head-to-head in any major events, then finishing position in all events will be reviewed. However, the finishing position in the major events/distances will carry more weight than the finishing position in other runs. For example, if one person finishes first in three major events, they will be deemed the Champion, compared to someone finishing first in three other events in the Championship Series.

Where a member changes age groups during the period, they will only be eligible for the age group of their first event for the year. Events contested at the older age group will be included in the seven events for the lower age group award.

Under 16 Awards will be made to members under 16 years of age, based on the most outstanding female and male performance over three events having a maximum distance of 5km (any WAMC events, not necessarily those nominated as Club Championship events due to the distance limitation). If a member attains the age of 16 during the year, races in which the member competes from the birthday on may be counted for the purpose of the 16 to 19 age group as above, but they will only be eligible to win one age group.

To qualify for club champion, individuals must have volunteered at least once at a WAMC event within the same year they are competing for the title. They also need to have participated in a minimum number of events:

  • Under 16: 3 events
  • 16 to 24: 5 events
  • 25 to 59: 8 events
  • Over 60: 5 events
